In classical chamber music, the trio is a very beloved form since it has a fuller and richer sound than a solo or duet, yet a more intimate and uncluttered feel than a quartet or quintet.
Ha, ha, that was a ridiculous statement and I just made it up.
Anyway, about once a year I make a mix for the "Classical Edition" series. This one is a chamber music mix featuring trios. The most common combination is a "piano trio," which does not mean three pianos, but consists of piano, violin, and cello. Since most trios are longish works, the track on the mix is a 3 to 5 minute excerpt, usually from an uptempo section such as the Allegro.
Besides many well-known composers, the mix contains a number of lesser known names, because in classical music it is like so important to have indie cred. Many of them are what classical fans call "living composers," as opposed to the, um, regular kind. In fact two of them - and now we are really going to extremes - are Australian.

it's always good to see the classics getting their dues. i don't listen to enough of it and i really should considering my love of film scores which i suppose for classicists is a poor relation or rather lightweight. Thumbs up from me.
Wow! This is worth three cheers, of course, and a virtual three thumbs up, although I can really grant it just one. Great job, Ed.
Superb mix Ed. I have a 52 song, 6 hour classical mix that I play about 4 times a year. When it comes to a classical mix, I don't think you have to worry about "indie cred" :-)
Easy thumb's up, I am looking forward to this more than any this morning.
I will eagerly fill in one of Nancy's thumbs for her. Hello, my name is Kathy, and I am a classical music junkie.
I don't listen to nearly enough classical.... Thumbs up, by the way.
Please say you're going to do one of classical quintets next and call it "The Famous Five"! (Bonus points if you manage to include one involving four humans and a dog.)
I like the looks of this. I've never heard the trio version of Verklärte Nacht, so between that and all those living composers and Australians, I have to admit that your indie cred for classical music exceeds mine by far. Though of course the real way to show off would have been to kick off this mix with one of the trio sonatas by Johann Christoph Friedrich or Carl Philipp Emanuel instead of their dad ;)
ignorant, ignorant, ignorant as i am.I like the way some classical music makes me feel.NPR is something i used to listen to classical music like at work or something but,it was just in passing background to the foreground.I will take the time and listen. Thanks for the lesson in listening.Learning is fun!
Variety is the spice of life. Great that you post mixes like these. Your first two paragraphs made me smile..
great mix and notes... and this was a nice respite from the '70s rock and the crappy pop metal my colleagues enjoy playing at work these days. thanks!
A very different mix to my ears. Very informative though, and I do like it quite a bit.
