I went to a matinee performance of Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash today. I admit to a bias against “jukebox musicals,” and although this one was a fairly decent example of its genre, it was still just stringing together a bunch of the “usual suspect” hits with not much plotline. Eh. At least the performers were very good and enthusiastic.
I stayed around for a talkback with the performers after the show. The first question the moderator asked the audience was, “How many of you were big fans of Johnny Cash coming in?” Maybe about 20% of the people raised their hands. Then, “How many of you knew at least 80% of the songs?” Maybe 10% raised their hands, including me. I’m thinking that country music fans and theatre fans don’t overlap much. Maybe I’m the one piece of overlap in the entire community?
So, they were having a lively discussion of Cash’s influence and the changes made to the show since it flopped on Broadway, when an audience member asked, “Did any of Johnny Cash’s children go into music?” I think my jaw hit the floor. I need to remind myself that not everyone is into this kind of music. Not everybody has an extensive collection of Rosanne Cash and Carlene Carter music, and that’s OK. Really. They’ve got a lot of great stuff to discover.
So, this is my Ring of Fire-inspired mix, including the Cash/Carter extended family, offspring and former in-laws, Cash side projects, songs that weren’t used in the show (the director mentioned a few that they specifically couldn’t get the rights to) and well-known Carter/Cash songs. The Cash family chronicles, as it were.
Title from Rosanne.

This will get lots of props from the ZeRO community!
Right up my alley, as you can well imagine. I would prefer this to the jukebox musical any day!
Great stuff....
Never sleep on the Cash family for sure. Rosanne and Carlene are my favorite branches.
Great picks!
No Prep H jokes from me here, (although I do suffer from a "Ring Of Fire" now and then). This is pretty great. I have always loved the title track. Ever heard the version by Eric Burden And The Animals which came out soon after the original? Pretty good too.
It's a family affair and they did so much good stuff. But you're right, not quite poppy enough to make it as a jukebox musical; that only works for ABBA and Billy Joel.
Wow, can't believe I missed this, late to the party.
It's defiantly a Family Affair with fine folks taboot!
Well done, all the way around!
Even though I know less than 80% of the songs, I give this mix 100% of a thumbs up.
